Pied Heron

great to see this handsome Heron, the first time I'd seen one of these ...

at Taronga Zoo, Sydney

from the fact sheet added at bottom of post, it tells that distribution is in Northern Australia, and parts of Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia

Fact sheet here, from Perth Zoo, W.A.

He looks blue in the first couple of pics, and dark gray in the rest of the pics!!!!! Can you clarify which is the true color????? I have a delicious Dee's Distinctively dies heron die and am never quite sure what color to make it.
Thanks,
Jan

I was going to say "I've never seen one before," then you said the same! I don't feel so bad about it now. What a great gift you've given us all, Carole! This one's a real beauty!

Jan: you asked about the variations in colour "what is its true colour". It seems to be a matter of lighting bouncing from those gunmetal grey coloured feathers (as Roy put it) ...there does seem to be some inherent peacock blue happening depending on the light source. When I look at Pied Heron IMAGES online, you will also note these same variations in photographs. Since there are many differing herons, you could make yours dark grey - light grey - or dark blue/grey, and even WHITE (for Great White Egret)

Fascinating bird, Carole! In the first image, I thought of Stampin' Up's "Not Quite Navy"! :-)

Happy Easter Carole. You must know how I love herons. The pied is beautiful.

Hi there - I find this bird to be very hard to get close to in the wild (not that I see that many!) - but they seem very flighty.

Glad you liked the wordy post.

The colour is so much darker than any herons I have seen north of Toronto. A snappy dresser!

I think this is a whole separate heron.
In the Netherlands we do not know this is why blogging is so nice because then we can look at each other :-)
