Even though I give it a quick scrub with a long-handled brush between water changes, the algae still manages to take a strong hold overall, so I continually just go on 'topping it up' with a new water change. In the summer I mostly would top it up to the rim, but today it was just a good bucket-full.
Has anyone a tip for stripping the residue (apart from sanding, without leaving any substance that could be toxic to birds? I'm wondering about bi-carb soda or similar? If no solutions, then I'll replace it. I kind of feel the birds deserve a 'fresh' bird-bath after all these years.
Still, before long, in came the raucous Red Wattle Bird for a splash; he's not too daunted how it looks.

Bird baths bring SO many little feathered friends into our gardens .... I don't know how to rectify the problem with algae Carole ... I just change the water daily and every so often give it a scrub .

I use to have the same concerns as you Carole then I began observing some of the nasty water holes birds avail themselves to in the wild then realized why care? If for your own peace of mind, maybe a coat of a high gloss enamel paint?
great shots of this bird! i fight algae, too. i know some folks scrub with bleach and rinse but i'm always afraid of leaving too much residue behind that could be toxic. so they get a bit of green in their bath - at least it is natural and not chemical. :)
