They'd been catching black-fish (the fishermen that is), and apparently the pelicans keep a vigil for this activity to take place before they pack up and head for home. I'd have loved to get some snaps of them flying in and skidding on the water like they do, but with my point and shoot only, sun on the screen, and me trying to 'find' them in it quickly; no good captures. Maybe I'll go back another day just to try and achieve this with my "other" camera.
So with a combination of late afternoon sun, sharp contrasting shadows and some over-exposure, here's the best of them to share for World Bird Wednesday.

Great photos of the pelicans. They are always fun to watch. The single bird against the waters of the lake is especially beautiful.
Never seen a pelican foto that didn't put a smile on my face. Love these birds. Your little point and click does a great job. I know what you mean by the sun on the screen. Many a picture with mine with the sun blaring on the screen is just hoping for the best.

Great images of the Pelicans, Carole. I find these birds so fascinating for so many reasons - their enormous bills, the fact they can fly so effortlessly (in spite of being the Jumbo jet of the bird world), the bizzare behaviour of turning their bills inside out (I plan to post my shots of that next week). They are quite incredible!
Those are gorgeous images, Carole! I don't think of pelicans being so benign anymore ever since I watched on YouTube one picking up a pigeon next to it on the pavement and swallowing it whole!
