Emu
According to the fact sheet on this NSW Government website the word emu comes from the Portuguese word 'ema', meaning large bird. This bird stands up to 2 metres tall.

It's always weird for me to imagine seeing Australian animals in the wild, I hope I can one day.
They are probably well camouflaged with their feathers in the brown grass.
Their feathers look soooo fluffy and soft...wonder if they are???

Beautiful shots of a very interesting bird Carole. It's great to see these huge birds along side the road. In rural Northern California we have several roaming around due to the interest of Emu and Ostrich farming here. I love the Emu's eyes and eye lashes and the drumming noises they make.
