World Bird Wednesday - Noisy Miner

Probably since sometime during last year, I came to learn about a tele-conversion lens option (x 1.7) for my Sony DSC-H1 camera. The unfortunate part was in finding out about them way so late, since that camera is now discontinued.

Many times over I'd locate one 'in stock' showing online here in Australia, or the U.S., and thought BINGO!   However, time and time over, that seemed to be a ploy to grab a potential customer, by then advising that the item wasn't in fact available any longer, but that they could substitute an even better one. (Better than the original Sony brand one?) I slunk back and decided to put it all to rest.

KEH Camera came to the fore more recently, advertising this same lens second-hand. Graded excellent had me keen to order, but it was also during a period of their site crashing, and subsequent emails of mine to them would bounce into a spam folder at the other end! Time lapsed between responses and I thought this potential too was going to collapse into thin air. The end result though is we did work our way through ultimately, and my order was finally on it's way.  Seventeen days later, it turned up on my doorstep (last week); that seemed like an eternity! All was good; perfect packaging and in the best condition, so big accolades to KEH Camera/USA.

Next morning I had a chance to try it out, set on a tripod, overlooking the back garden

can see I need to pull back a bit to gain the sharper image

Gee, looks like you already have yours dialed in. Photos look great. It took me awhile, some experimentation to find out what worked best with my teleconvertor. Finally I settled on setting the ISO at 800, exposing one full stop over, using f7 or higher apeture and manual focusing. Have fun!

I've done that too, discovered something too late and it's discontinued and then searching to the ends of the earth (almost) and finally finding that one item! Woot! for you!

I am not sure what a teleconverter does, now that I have read your comments. Does it sit on top of your usual lens and allow you to get closer before shooting?

I am confused by the settings that Sinbad said worked for him, because I thought that exposing a full stop over AND with an ISO of 800 would have led to an overexposed shot. So how does the converter alter usual rules?

Where you say you need to 'pull back' I would have thought that you needed a slightly faster shutter speed because the bird moved a smidge. The foliage in all of them is spot on.

Thanks for all your lovely comments!

Julie; Tele-conversion lens boosts focal distance by 1.7x. It's attached via a conversion lens adaptor, and that screws onto the base lens.

You asked questions I don't know how to answer re Sinbad's comments, so I won't try. I generally don't bother shifting from 100 ISO unless in low-lighting situation.

You're right re a slightly faster shutter speed helping to overcome the slight fuzziness when the bird moved. I hadn't even thought of that, so thanks a lot. I'm not yet into working various settings manually at all. My quick assumption had been that I'd zoomed in to the max and caused that to happen.
