St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney

According to St Mary's Cathedral website, this English-style gothic church was designed by architect William Wilkinson Wardell, and shaped from local yellow-block sandstone on which this city is built.  It replaced the original cathedral, which had been ruined by fire during 1865.  This building was finally completed 100 years after the architect's death.

It does have that old english look to it. And it keeps very clean. Alot of these suffer due to the fact the sand stone is porous and the smog from the cars build up in the pours over time and make it look black and grubby.

That's a large cathedral! The design on the door I, kind of, used for a Zentangle.

You were lucky to get the inside shot of that door, without being pounced upon by an usher!

If you go around the back of the cathedral, you can see the wall that is the last remaining part of the original cathedral.

Wonderful pictures Carole....I especially love the door!!! Your framing is great - seeing the church thru the trees! Certainly makes me want to be there...thanks for sharing thru your eyes!!

Julie, yes it was the last photograph I took when entering the cathedral. Since there had been no stipulations on taking photos at St. Andrew's, I'd assumed it was the same at St. Mary's too. Those buildings are so beautiful and I'm in awe at the architecture. My visit there couldn't include time to venture around to the back section, but that is an interesting note; maybe next time! Thanks for letting me know there is a remaining part of the original cathedral there.

Such an amazing building Carole, the outside still looks so clean which is unusual for a Cathedral or Church.
