Birding at Myuna Bay, N.S.W.

Starting point at 8.30 a.m. on a very chilly morning; much closer to home-base this one.

Pied Butcherbird - has a SUPER song.  Rather flute-like and it just echoed sweetly in the air.  You can hear it here on the Birds in Backyards fact-sheet (see side-bar for audio).

just a little higher, and in the same tree .. a Great Egret.  A strange combo, but it worked!

Sydney (sp) Wattle

..a bit fuzzy around the edges but these little boys move so fast, there was just one chance to hit the shutter while it was still in the viewfinder.  Superb Fairy Wren.

back out on the roadway, powerlines above, and a Bar-shouldered Dove

 Welcome Swallows

Silver Gull

Looks like a great little birding spot. I agree with you on the Pied Butcherbird - one of my favourite Australian songsters and I can do a pretty good imitation of the tune too! :)

I was looking through my records for the year the other day and I think the Bar-shouldered Dove may be one of my most frequently recorded birds. I used to think the most common Brisbane pigeon was the Spotted Dove, with the BSD and Peaceful Dove sharing second place, but the BSD's have really made a comeback and I hardly see the other two at all. Is it a common bird on the Central Coast?

Hi Christian, I believe it would be considered relatively common here. Tks for your comments too :).

OMW That Pied Butcher bird is a handsome bird with an AMAZING call. I LOVE it. I simply loved this post and only realized you were from Oz when I saw the Welcome Swallows. I've seen these on another Australian blogger's -Stewart Monckton - post. Do you follow his post? He hosts a wonderful meme called Wild Bird Wednesday. Thanks for sharing all your amazing birds. I have never seen a Bar-shouldered Dove (not even a photo!) Greetings, Jo (East Africa)

The one swallow is really pointing the way. Or maybe he was pointing you to another great birds shot. You never know.
