It was totally unexpected, and somewhat magical, to find this special place where Australian native Xanthorrhoea, sometimes know also as Grass Trees, grow so abundantly.
Considering it can take twenty years just for the trunk to form, according to my must-watch Saturdays 6.30 p.m. ABC Gardening Show, (fact-sheet here), imagine how long these have been growing. Ever so slowly, but seemingly in peak condition with their tall flower-spikes, being both insect and bird attracting.
they were growing on both sides of the road
not a lot of time for photos, since the skies starting dropping some heavy spits of rain, meaning it was time to move on
Mistletoe
Just add water, and it would be a very different picture. Surprising though to see how green along the edges still.

HI Carole I have never seen as many Grass Trees in one place. Yes everywhere is getting less green for you, not for us!! thank you for answering my question. So you live on the central coast? Do you know Alan Morris? I have stayed with and birded with him
ReplyDeleteMargaret; I live at Lake Macquarie; and Alan led this birding camp at Bingara; small world.
ReplyDeleteHope you're not being threatened by the awful bush fires we see pictures of.
ReplyDeletethank you David for your concern but thankfully yesterday's fires aren't too close to home; around 30 klms away. The winds have carried smoke here this afternoon making it very eerie, and hopefully this dreadful start to spring will be snuffed out real soon.
ReplyDeleteThe grass trees look great when lots grow together.
ReplyDeletethose grass trees are very cool!
ReplyDeleteCool photos...love the birds!

The grass trees look like an alien plant form or something out of a Dr. Seuss book.
