Cormorants and Darters

Lake Macquarie, at Morisset, N.S.W.  Believe this rustic structure had once been swimming/baths, and I hope it remains there as long as because, what a great spot for these birds to sit and contemplate

a fisherman was drifting way out there in his canoe.  I'm sure he would've been in a contemplative mood too

as I was also (in a contemplative mood).  That is, wondering what f-stop would be best, should I put the exposure + or - for this Pied Cormorant

with a little (out of focus) Welcome Swallow, sitting alongside.  Hadn't realized it was there when taking the photo; my eye in the viewfinder was on the cormorant

  8. You did a great job with the choice of the f stop! Albeit you did miss that little guy in the back, but you could just photoshop him out. The cormorants are lovely and look quite large. Had never seen a darter before. Lovely markings.

  14. Hi there - great set of pictures - and I agree that water birds like this do make use of our abandoned woodwork.

    Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne

PS: I think that the Little Pied - may be a Pied Cormorant instead. (I never know if I should do things like this - because the key thing is that its a good looking bird!)

  15. enjoyed everyone's comments, thank you. Stewart: it's never an issue that I be picked up on bird specie/type. From the distance it hadn't occurred to me at all that they were the Pied Cormorant instead of the Little Pied Cormorant. I'm really happy to have it pointed out, it's how I learn (sometimes). Will make changes to the post...

  17. Carole, I really enjoyed your post. We have many similar scenes of deteriorating water structures around here and it would look quite forlorn without cormorants and darters (anhingas) posing on every post!

    Nice work!

thanks for visiting Snap Happy Birding, and for leaving a comment; I can still see them. Now both my blogs are resting in idle mode. It was time to give other things priority, even though I miss my regular blogging and the feedback that came my way over the years. Take care.
