thanks each for your lovely comments, and to Barb's "what program did you use?" I've used Corel's PhotoImpactX3 for many years. Lassoo a segment of a duplicated photo is a matter of mouse-clicking around the portion you want to turn into an object. Then you can move it to wherever you like on the original, add a shadow if it suits, and merge. You would be able to do similarly with any other photo-editing product you might have.
