Red-winged Parrots

Location: Carnarvon Gorge, Central Qld

Late afternoon and these Red-Winged Parrots were in to feed on the Macrozamia fruits.  The outer coral-coloured flesh is palatable to parrots, kangaroo and wallabies too.

The large seed inside is quite toxic though.  Isn't nature amazing?  Animals and birds eat the flesh, and leave the seed to regenerate over time.

Thirty Wilderness Lodges were nicely spaced for privacy.  There is an abundance of the natural growing Macrozamias wherever you walk.

More from Carnarvon Gorge goes to Snap Happy Online.  Just check out the updated photo-link in side-bar here.

  2. Hi Carole that looks like a lovely place to stay and go birding. Now I do not think I have seen this Parrot before so it was lovely looking at your photographs and seeing what it eats.

Not a parrot that we get to see in Melbourne - however I did see one in Mt Surprise during a trip we took to to FNQ one year.
Thanks for reminding me and for bringing back happy memories of a happy trip we took to escape the cold Melbourne winter!
    Take care

  8. I wondered why the seeds were left alone. After seeing the male, I no longer wondered how they came by their name.

  31. They are such beautiful parrots Carole. The colours are amazing especially the way the one just blends into the centre of the Macrozamia tree. An unusual name for a tree too.

  33. I've always been fascinated by this Parrot species, as the distribution map shows it lives teasingly close to Brisbane, yet I've never seen one. Good to see what kind of (beautiful!!!) country it lives in.

thanks for visiting Snap Happy Birding, and for leaving a comment; I can still see them. Now both my blogs are resting in idle mode. It was time to give other things priority, even though I miss my regular blogging and the feedback that came my way over the years. Take care.
