Pied Heron

great to see this handsome Heron, the first time I'd seen one of these ...

at Taronga Zoo, Sydney

from the fact sheet added at bottom of post, it tells that distribution is in Northern Australia, and parts of Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia

Fact sheet here, from Perth Zoo, W.A.

  11. I was going to say "I've never seen one before," then you said the same! I don't feel so bad about it now. What a great gift you've given us all, Carole! This one's a real beauty!

  12. Jan: you asked about the variations in colour "what is its true colour". It seems to be a matter of lighting bouncing from those gunmetal grey coloured feathers (as Roy put it) ...there does seem to be some inherent peacock blue happening depending on the light source. When I look at Pied Heron IMAGES online, you will also note these same variations in photographs. Since there are many differing herons, you could make yours dark grey - light grey - or dark blue/grey, and even WHITE (for Great White Egret)

  19. Hi there - I find this bird to be very hard to get close to in the wild (not that I see that many!) - but they seem very flighty.

Glad you liked the wordy post.

thanks for visiting Snap Happy Birding, and for leaving a comment; I can still see them. Now both my blogs are resting in idle mode. It was time to give other things priority, even though I miss my regular blogging and the feedback that came my way over the years. Take care.
