7.30 a.m. and the sun welcomes a new day in Gloucester on the mid-north coast, N.S.W. Just the spot for an Olive-backed Oriole.
Just a half hour earlier. Attempts for early-bird photos failed due to the long exposures. Lights in the background belong to local swimming pool.
much further along, a delightful Grey Fantail
flitted back and forth from the shrubbery, across the river, picking up insects on the fly
and back again

ReplyDeleteHow do you ever learn to identify all these species of birds, Carole! (I swear we only have 3 here, but it's not true. There are a few more. Ha!) Still, I wonder, do you take a birding book with you, or just know them all by now?! It's so impressive!
ReplyDeletethanks everyone! ...Sharyl, you gradually get to easily identify those you see most often, but as for new birds in differing locations i.e. the olive-backed oriole, one of my birding friends walking with me that morning knew it. Once someone tells me what a new bird is I make a note and then look it up in my bird book etc. Can't carry my heavy bird-book around with me - I have my binoculars around my neck; my long-lens camera off one shoulder, and my little point and shoot for locations pics in my pocket. Sometimes it's also wise to have a backpack with other things i.e. water, insect repellent, sun-screen - the list gets longer....
