Camera Critters - Grey-headed Flying-Fox

Archival photos, location Blackbutt Nature Reserve, N.S.W. From a distance, when walking the reserve, it was thought we were walking up the hill into the rainforest pocket, towards a flock of very noisy parrots perhaps.   A complete surprise to find this colony of fruit-bats camped there instead.

According to Environment & Heritage site here, they play an important ecosystem function by providing a means of seed dispersal and pollination for many indigenous tree species.

Pretty cool how they wrap themselves in their wings when they sleep!

  4. How cool! I like how the light shows through the skin of their wings. The way they "cocoon" themselves while hanging upside down is really neat.

We have a bat house on our property, but don't think it has ever been used by a bat...too many trees around for them I guess.

thanks for visiting Snap Happy Birding, and for leaving a comment; I can still see them. Now both my blogs are resting in idle mode. It was time to give other things priority, even though I miss my regular blogging and the feedback that came my way over the years. Take care.
